Couple's deaths in Snohomish River remain a mystery

SNOHOMISH -- Detectives may never know why a Snohomish-area couple's Mitsubishi Mirage went off the road into the Snohomish River last winter.
Jason J. Dolman, 31, and Riza P. Ysulat, 36, were missing for weeks. On Jan. 23, police found their car in the river, off Riverview Road, west of town. Their bodies were inside. Both had drowned.
The Snohomish County sheriff's Collision Investigation Unit's case remains active, detective Doug Gold said last week.
Most recently, laboratory tests results came back showing no evidence of drugs or alcohol being involved, he said.
Investigators also had the car undergo a mechanical inspection. No problems were found that could have caused the crash.
Detectives checked weather records, too. There was nothing to indicate that roads would have been icy at the time of the crash.
Most likely, the crash was an accident, possibly caused by a distraction inside or outside the car, Gold said.
"Why we may never know," he said.
