Bantam draft thread, Jost is the pick, plus a local

It's bantam draft day. Everett picks seventh overall. The first round can be watched at the WHL website. Other good resources are Alan Caldwell's blog and the Silvertips website.

Everett's pick will be coming soon ...

--- UPDATE, 8:15 a.m.

The Tips selected right wing Tyson Jost with the seventh-overall pick.

Jost is listed at 5-foot-9 and 169 pounds. He hails from Leduc, Alberta, but played last season with the Pursuit of Excellence program in Kelowna, B.C. He tallied 77 goals and 79 assists in 49 games. He also has grit to his game as he compiled 71 penalty minutes. He had a good Alberta Cup (which is the provincial evaluation camp), notching five goals and seven assists in five games while playing aside Tyler Benson, the first-overall pick by Vancouver.

So a smaller skilled forward with a little grit to his game. I'm betting he can skate, too. Seems to fit the mould of what the Tips have been trying to build.

--- UPDATE, 8:45 a.m.

After doing some poking around, it seems the Tips picked Jost (pronounced in the Scandinavian fashion) right about where he was expected to go. Jost was ranked ninth on The Pipeline Show's list and eighth on Kelly Friesen's list.

--- UPDATE, 9:20 a.m.

The Tips have selected the draft's first American, taking Walnut Creek, Calif., center Patrick Khodorenko in the second round, 26th overall. Khodorenko is listed at 5-foot-10 and 161 pounds and is a late birthdate. He played for Honeybaked, which means he was playing in Detroit. The best information I can find so far is that he had 15 goals, 25 assists and 12 penalty minutes in 23 games.

Everett took a skilled American forward in the third round last year in Auston Matthews. Matthews is playing the next two seasons for the U.S. National Team Development Program. I'm sure the Tips are hoping to have better luck recruiting Khodorenko.

--- UPDATE, 9:50 a.m.

In the third round (51st overall) the Tips select their first defenseman, Alex Astasiewicz from Salmon Arm, B.C. Astasiewicz is listed at 6-foot and 178 pounds. Astasiewicz is also a late birthdate. No stats available just yet.

--- UPDATE, 10:35 a.m.

Everett takes Winnipeg winger Kevin Jakisch in the fourth round, 80th overall. Jakisch is 5-foot-11 and 168 pounds.

In other news, former Everett prospect Geordie Maguire is on the move again. Maguire, who was dealt to Brandon last offseason as he wouldn't sign with Everett, was sent by the Wheat Kings to Regina along with a third-round pick, apparently as compensation for the Pats not selecting winger Nolan Patrick with the second-overall pick. Patrick was taken by Brandon at No. 4.

--- UPDATE, 11 a.m.

I mentioned local defenseman Connor Nobach in yesterday's blog post as a possible pick in this year's draft, and lo and behold it was the Tips who pulled the trigger on the Stanwood product, selecting Nobach in the fifth round, 91st overall. Nobach is 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, and played for the L.A. Jr. Kings. Everett assistant coach Mitch Love said Nobach played very well at the U.S. prospects camp in Anaheim in April.

Nobach is the third-ever Snohomish County product selected in the bantam draft, and as a fifth rounder he's the highest ever picked. It's also the second straight year Everett has drafted a local, after taking Mill Creek defenseman Daniel Woolfenden in the seventh round last year. Mill Creek winger Brad LeLievre was the first-ever Snohomish County played drafted, being picked in the seventh round by Seattle in 2010.
