Two Seahawks (so far) named in list of NFL’s top 100 players

As a way to keep people talking about the NFL 12 months a year, NFL.com has been for the last few years putting out a list of the top 100 players in the league. It’s a list voted on by players, or so they say (I’ve talked to more than a few players in the Seahawks locker room who said they have never voted, nor do they know a player who has, so take it for what it’s worth).

And lists like these really don’t mean a whole lot in the end. I mean, the NFL isn’t going to give a team a playoff berth or a first-round bye because they had the most players on a best 100 list. But lists are fun, right? There’s a reason they get so many darn clicks on the internet. We like to rank things, even if that means the nearly impossible task of ranking athletes in a sport where each position is so different.

So anyway, the list comes out 10 players at a time over a couple of weeks (I’m telling you, the NFL doesn’t ever want you not thinking about it). So far, players 100-81 have been revealed, and included in that group is All-Pro center Max Unger, who was ranked 95, and newly acquired receiver Percy Harvin, who checks in at No. 90. As is pointed out in the video (sorry, you’ll have to click the link, NFL.com doesn’t let you imbed video), Harvin likely would have come in higher on the list if he had stayed healthy last year. He was, after all, in the MVP discussion before suffering a midseason ankle injury in Seattle.

With those two already on the list, you have to figure Seattle will have at least seven players show up in the top 100. Marshawn Lynch was the best RB in the league not named Adrian Peterson last year. Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas were both first-team All Pros, and Russell Okung and rookie quarterback Russell Wilson played in the Pro Bowl. Wilson may not yet be considered one of the very best at his position like the other Seahawks mentioned, but there is more value placed on his position, so the fact that he is, let’s say a top 10-15 quarterback now and climbing, should be enough to put him on the list.
