Mother's Day gifts that matter
My daughter and I had fun going to Fabric of Life, the great boutique right here in our hometown of Edmonds. It's on Main Street, a couple of doors down from Revelations Yogurt.
In addition to being a beautiful store, Fabric of Life is also a nonprofit. It's founded by Carol Schillios and staffed by volunteers. All are committed to making a difference in the lives of women all over the world through the sale of fair trade goods. (Julie Muhlstein wrote a great article about Carol from The Herald right here.)
The cards I bought have fabric on them dyed by graduates of the Here je Center in Bamako, Mali, West Africa. The goal of the center is to help women "go from begging to businesswomen in 18 months."
My preschooler picked out a soapstone box from Kenya and a carved rock. I'm not sure if they will make their way into the Mother's Day baskets or not. My daughter is pretty attached!
There were all sorts of other goodies to be had at Fabric of Life Boutique. We will definitely be visiting again in the future.
