Rush's Matthews named NLL Rookie of the Year

Mark Matthews of the Edmonton Rush was named the National Lacrosse League Rookie of the Year on Wednesday.

Matthews, the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2012 NLL entry draft, finished first among rookies with 38 goals, the third-most in NLL history. He scored in all 16 games in the regular season and finished second on the Rush and 15th in the league in points with 69 (38 goals, 31 assists).

Matthews helped lead the Rush to a 9-7 record in the regular season before being ousted in the NLL's West Division semifinal by the Washington Stealth.

Minnesota transition player Kiel Matisz finished second in the voting, while Buffalo transition player Dhane Smith finished third.

The NLL season awards are determined by a vote of the league's Board of Governors, general managers and head coaches.

The NLL Most Valuable Player will be announced today.
