The the April 29 article, "Gun background check advocates plan initiative," states, "After struggling to sway both state and federal lawmakers, proponents of expanding background checks for gun sales are now exploring whether they will have more success by taking the issue directly to voters." Per Washington state Rep. Jamie Pedersen (D) "It's more powerful if the voters do it -- as opposed to our doing it," Pedersen said. "And it would make it easier for the Legislature to do even more."
Most gun owners do not object to a background check, it is the "And it would make it easier for the Legislature to do even more" part that is the real agenda of gun control advocates that is objected to. A real fear is "do even more" could easily lead to a federal registry of legal, law-abiding gun owners.
