The town of Langley is putting on a celebration this weekend that pays tribute to strong women of the past and today’s mothers and daughters.
Today, women suffragettes will march at 11 a.m. in downtown Langley, followed by one-of-a-kind street theater to celebrate those who fought for women’s right to vote.
There will be costumes, banners and songs from a 1909 suffragette songbook. A rally at Whale Bell Park will feature speeches and a group of male hecklers, according to a press release.
It has been 100 years since the suffragettes marched on Washington, D.C., on March 3, 1913, and Langley turns 100 this year, so it’s a good time for a celebration.
“Our 100th birthday is a good time to honor the suffragettes and women and mothers of today who continue to inspire,” said Janet Ploof, president of Langley Main Street Association.
You can spend the whole weekend on Langley celebrating Mother’s Day as Ott &Murphy’s on First Street is holding a Mother’s Day Brunch and Tea. There will be two seatings, 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday. Call 360-221-7131 for a reservation.
During brunch, a quartet from the Whidbey Chamber Singers will perform songs, madrigals and more, including works by William Paxton, Arthur Sullivan and Pierre Certon.
