ARLINGTON — It was a good day for the defending state champion Kamiak girls tennis team as Sally Park won the singles championship and the doubles team of Zoe Jovanovich and Elizabeth Norris took home the doubles title at the 4A District 1 Tennis Tournament.
Park, a junior who has placed fourth in state the past two years and went undefeated in league matches this season, cruised to the tournament win, sweeping all of her opponents and winning the final 6-1, 6-0.
“She had her game together and did what she needed to do. … She’s continued to work hard all year,” said Kamiak head coach Heidi Bloemker. “Her game has imnproved each year and she continues to become a stronger and smarter player with confidence.”
Jovanovich and Norris didn’t have quite as smooth a road, dropping the first set in their semifinal match Tuesday. But the two got it done 6-3, 6-1 in the final two and will be advancing to state.
For the veteran Jovanovich, this is nothing new: She placed seventh at state last year and this will be her third trip. For her new partner sophomore Norris, however, this was her first district tournament.
“I’m really proud of what they’ve done together in the past few weeks since the postseason started. They’ve really just jelled together,” Bloemker said.
The Knights also have a chance to send yet another representative to the state tournament. If Jenna Gilbert can win the singles consolation final she will earn her way into a play-in match with her Kingco counterpart Saturday. Gilbert will have to make up some ground after losing the first set to Caroline Dreher of Snohomish before the match was postponed due to rain. The two are scheduled to finish up today at 3 p.m.
Gilbert is also a state tournament veteran, having placed second in doubles along with her since-graduated sister last year. This is her first year competing in singles.
Also going to state are Myint-Zu Kyaw of Edmonds-Woodway in singles and Monica Kwong and Cristina Borsan of Lynnwood in doubles. Erin and Megan Huffman came out on top in the doubles consolation bracket and move on to a state play-in match.
