ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Yankees right fielder Curtis Granderson was hit on the left hand by a pitch, which X-rays showed a broken knuckle on his pinkie finger.
Granderson was hit by Cesar Ramos’ pitch in the fifth inning of Friday night’s game against Tampa Bay and at first stayed in the game. He later scored, but was replaced defensively by Ichiro Suzuki in the bottom of the inning.
New York manager Joe Girardi said after the Yankees’ 9-4 win over the Rays that there was no official timeline for how long Granderson will be sidelined, but indicated it could be a minimum of four weeks.
Granderson will see a hand specialist Monday in New York. He missed the first 38 games this season with a broken right forearm, the result of a hit by pitch in his first at-bat at spring training.
Yankees starting pitcher David Phelps left in the eighth after he was hit on the right forearm by a drive up the middle by Ben Zobrist. He walked off the field and was replaced by Boone Logan.
X-rays were negative.
Phelps was a little sore after the game, but didn’t rule out making his next start.
