4A State Tournament
Arlington vs. South Kitsap
When: Today, 10 a.m.
Where: Merkel Sports Complex, Spokane
Records: Arlington 11-3 Wesco 4A North, 19-3 overall, District 1 No. 1 seed; South Kitsap 10-2, 17-5, District 3/4 No. 8 seed.
Next up: The winner advances to a quarterfinal game against the Bothell/Todd Beamer winner at 4 p.m. today.
Scouting report: After missing out on the state tournament last year, Arlington's seniors have unfinished business. The Eagles seniors: Ronnie Ladines, Hayley and Hayden Fields, Lynsey Amundson and Alyssa Campbell, have helped Arlington enter the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the state, having won 13 of 14. The Eagles face a South Kitsap team that went 2-2 in the West Central District tournament and is led by pitcher Ashley Chamberlin. Arlington coach Dan Eng said the Wolves use a bunt-first offense. "As a defense we need to stay home and follow our assignments and we'll be fine," Eng said.
Lake Stevens vs. Camas
When: Today, noon
Where: Merkel Sports Complex, Spokane
Records: Lake Stevens 11-3 Wesco 4A North, 17-6 overall, District 1 No. 2 seed; Camas 19-5 overall, District 3/4 No. 2 seed.
Next up: The winner advances to a quarterfinal game against the Olympia/Central Valley winner at 4 p.m. today.
Scouting report: Camas is led offensively by Amee Aarhus, who is hitting .419 and has four triples and two HR. The Papermakers have two equally strong pitchers in Harli Hubbard (137 strikeouts and a 1.67 earned-run average) and Katie Schroeder (134 strikeouts, 1.35 ERA, 0.90 walks/hits allowed per inning), who have combined for their 19 wins this season.
3A State Tournament
Mountlake Terrace vs. Prairie
When: Today, 9 a.m.
Where: Regional Sports Complex, Lacey
Records: Mountlake Terrace 7-6 Wesco 3A South, 13-10 overall, District 1 No. 2 seed; Prairie District 3/4 No. 3 seed.
Next up: The winner advances to a quarterfinal game against the Bonney Lake/Juanita winner at 4 p.m. today.
Scouting report: Prairie won the 3A Greater St. Helens League title with a 9-1 record. The Falcons beat league rival Kelso, which also made it to the state tournament, 10-9 in the district tournament.
The Falcons’ top player is Taylor Bussey, an all-league infielder. Bussey is regarded as one of the best hitters in the state.
Nicole O’Haver, an outfielder who also was a first-team all-league pick, is a speedy lead-off batter who often turns routine ground balls into infield hits.
Other players to look out for are sophomore outfielder Jamie Phares and catcher Kayla Bergerson, both second-team all-league picks.
Meadowdale vs. Auburn Mountainview
When: Today, noon
Where: Regional Sports Complex, Lacey
Records: Meadowdale 13-0 Wesco 3A South, 20-2 overall, District 1 No. 1 seed; Auburn Mountainview 6-9 South Puget Sound League, 13-12 overall, District 3/4 No. 6 seed.
Next up: The winner advances to the quarterfinals to face the Interlake/Enumclaw winner at 4 p.m. today.
Scouting report: Last week's district tournament was a good example of how Auburn Mountainview's season has gone. In the first round, the Lions exploded for 11 runs and they added 16 in a consolation semifinal, but in two losses Auburn Mountainview managed a total of six runs. The Lions have scored double-digit runs in eight games this season. But they also were held to three runs or less eight times. Savanna Gusman and Alicia Zabriskie lead a potent Lions offense that averaged 7.44 runs per game. On the mound, the Lions are led by Irene McGuire and Delene Colburn.
2A State Softball Tournament
Granite Falls vs. Port Angeles
When: Today, noon
Where: Carlon Park, Selah
Records: Granite Falls 13-5 Cascade Conference, 16-7 overall, District 1/2 No. 2 seed; Port Angeles 10-0 Olympic League, 20-4 overall, District 3 No. 3 seed.
Next up: The winner advances to the quarterfinals to face the Othello/W.F. West winner at 4 p.m. today.
Scouting report: Three of Port Angeles' losses were to Sequim. The Roughriders averaged 8.7 runs per game and gave up an average of 2.5. They are led by pitcher Sarah Steinman (11-2, 1.50 ERA), who isn't a big strikeout pitcher but uses good location to get hitters out. Offensively PA is led by shortstop Maddy Hinrichs (.416, 18 RBI), Steinman (.342, 19 RBI) and third baseman Ashlee Reid (.364, 4 HRs, 22 RBI).
