State tennis: Lynnwood doubles team advance to state semifinals

RICHLAND-- Lynnwood's Monica Kwong and Cristina Borsan bounced back from losing the second set to defeat Kentridge's Kyana Esber and Katie Ly in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in their first-round match at the 4A State Tennis Championships in Richland on Friday.
The momentum carried over to the tandem's quartfinal match against Olympia's Alli Batista and Gemma Robinson as Kwong and Borsan won in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 to advance to today's state semifinals at Richland H.S The two will face Garfield's Fiona Cerf and Alexia Fife.
"It really started with the third set of that first match," said Royals head coach Rob McMains. "That was when (Monica and Cristina) first settled into their groove and started playing with confidence and playing more aggressively. This is our first time being at state and I think now we're playing loose. I don't think anyone expected us to be here at this point, it's just really fun to be a part of."
In singles, Kamiak's Sally Park and Edmonds-Woodway's Myint-Zu Kyaw each went 2-1 and find themselves in the fourth-place and fifth-place matches, respectively. The differnece? Park won her first match of the day, a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tahoma's Maddie Turek, while Kyaw lost a three-set thriller to Union's Jelena Vidovic. Park faces Graham-Kapowsin's Megan Hagerty and Kyaw takes on South Kitsap's Kailyn Skjonsby.
Other notables
Cascade's Patrick Chung came back after losing his first match of the day to pick up a pair of wins and advance to the fifth-place match against Jefferson's Alex Chan in the 4A boys state tournament ... Stanwood's Jonathan Wolf went 2-1 to advance to the fourth-place match against Lakeside's Daniel Park in the 3A boys state tournament ... Glacier Peak's Nadean Al-Ali won her first match of the day against Kelso's Lisa Karnofski, but then dropped her final two matches, and Mountlake Terrace doubles team Nicki Bouche and Tina Liu rebounded after losing their first match to win a pair of matches, including a 6-4, 6-2 win over Stanwood's Christina Wolf and Rachel Rich, to advance to the fifth-place match in the 3A girls state tournament.
