Event to watch | 4A Boys 110 Hurdles
Like the 100-meter dash, the 110 hurdles is over in the blink of an eye. That leaves little room for error and makes it possible for any number of athletes to win it.
Enter Cascade's Kaleb Dobson, who finished 15th in the event at state last year. This year Dobson enters as one of the favorites having shaved more than a second off his time. The Bruins junior has the second-best time in the event in 4A behind Rogers' Eric Simpson.
But that doesn't make him a shoo-in for the podium. Four athletes, including Kentridge teammates Kevin Hall and Bralen Westendorf, are less than a tenth of a second behind Dobson.
Athlete to watch
Justin Peterson, Lakewood
The defending state champ in the 2A triple jump finds himself in a strange spot: A longshot as a senior.
Peterson, who won the 2A triple jump with a jump of 44-4 in 2012, has a season-best jump of 43-2.5 and isn't ranked in the top 10 in the state. Instead Tumwater's Lane Russell has the top distance of 46-7.5, with two other jumpers with longer jumps than Peterson's winning jump last season.
If Peterson is going to defend his title he's going to have to reach deep and at the very least equal his state-winning jump from last year and have a few of the top guys stumble.
