Seven years into my obsession I'm standing firm. No coop for me!
But I was really excited to see that PCC is selling eggs from Palouse Pastured Poultry in Rosalia, Washington. These eggs come from hens that are pasture raised, eat bugs, and have a well-documented happy life.
I'm not a chicken expert, but it looks like that green egg might be from an Americana, which is one of the chickens we considered raising. So this is about as close to backyard eggs as I'm going to get.
One dozen eggs cost me $5.75. Yes, that's really expensive! But it's also a lot cheaper than building a coop, buying feed, paying vet bills, rat proofing the backyard etc. (Whenever I forget all of the extraneous costs that go into backyard chickens, my husband is happy to remind me.)
Of course, I'm still pretty jealous of all of you chicken raisers out there. Coop envy never goes away.
