MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – The Mountlake Terrace girls basketball team will have a new head coach in 2013-14 after hiring 23-year-old Zach Wilde last month to replace Dave Brophy, who resigned after this past season.
It is Wilde’s first head coaching job after serving as an assistant coach for the Shorecrest girls team under Dori Monson this past season.
“We really like his energy and enthusiasm,” Mountlake Terrace athletic director Kim Stewart said. “He’s paid his dues and is ready to be a head coach.”
Wilde grew up in Snohomish County and played high school basketball at Snohomish, graduating in 2008. He played college basketball for one season at Clackamas Community College, where he helped the team win a NWAACC championship in 2009 and went on to play at the University of Hawaii Hilo.
Wilde’s first coaching experience came after he returned from college helping with the Snohomish boys summer program.
Wilde is looking forward to the opportunity to build the program at Mountlake Terrace.
“To build your own program, to be the guy that you have to have the answers and people come looking at you and not the other way around where you are asking the head coach – it’s always been a goal to have (my) own program and run it the right way,” Wilde said. “Ever since I got into this that has been my ultimate goal is to get there. I didn’t necessarily think it would happen so quick, but I think I’m ready for it.”
The Hawks have an experienced core of players that should help Wilde find some success in his first season. Samantha Romanowski, an All-Wesco first-team selection after this past season, is expected to lead the way offensively for Mountlake Terrace.
“To me, she’s the top scorer in the league,” Wilde said of Romanowski. “She can create her own shot. She can shoot off a catch, off a dribble. She’s going to be our top dog. She’s one of the top players in the league.”
