House Democrats aren’t giving up on their desire to allow students who arrived in this country illegally as children to receive state aid for college.
Deep in the weeds of the operating budget passed by House Democrats last week is $100,000 to set up a system enabling them to apply for a state need grant.
Those funds, as described on page 223 of the agency detail document, are going to the Washington Student Achievement Council “to develop an alternative financial aid application to allow students without a nine digit federal identification number to apply for financial aid.”
No mention of the money and purpose appear in the actual 453-page budget bill.
In the regular session, the House passed a bill for the so-called Dream Act and included $100,000 in its budget to pay for it. But the Republican-controlled Senate rejected the bill and the budget.
