EVERETT -- The Everett AquaSox are heading into the 2013 Northwest League season with the taste of victory in their mouths.
The AquaSox prepared for the season by defeating the Everett Merchants 6-3 in the 10th annual Everett Cup exhibition game Wednesday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Reggie Lawson went 2-for-4 with four RBI in the Sox's dress rehearsal for the season, which begins Friday at Spokane.
"I thought we came out with a lot of energy, and the intensity was good," Sox manager Rob Mummau said. "I think there was some nervousness from some of the guys, but overall I thought we did a good job.
"I think we're ready for the start of the season," Mummau added. "We'll find out this weekend, but I like the character and make-up of the team and I think we'll have a good year."
The Sox improved to 8-2 in Everett Cup games against the amateur Merchants.
The Merchants actually outhit the Sox 8-7. However, the Sox were much cleaner on the defensive side of the ball. The Merchants committed three errors against none for the Sox, and the Sox pitchers allowed far fewer walks and hits batters (three) than the Merchants (nine).
The Sox took full advantage of those extra baserunners early in the game to take command. Three walks and a hit batter in the bottom of the first helped the Sox take a 3-0 lead, with Lawson's two-run triple to right the big blow. Lawson was at it again in the second, again going to the other way with a two-run double as the Sox built a 5-0 lead that was never seriously threatened.
