Amy-Eloise Neale burst on the scene in the summer before her eighth-grade year when she, running for the Snohomish Track Club, won the 3,000-meter run in the Midget Girls Division at the 2007 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. It was a promise of much more success to come.
Despite all of the hype surrounding her arrival at Glacier Peak, Neale didn’t disappoint. The five-time USA Junior Olympic national track champion overcame nerves to win the Class 3A girls cross country individual championship in the fall and two state championships in the 1,600 and 3,200 at the track state championships in the spring.
In 2010-11 it was time for Neale to help her team win a state championship. The then-sophomore repeated as 3A girls individual champ in a time that broke the meet and course records to lead the Grizzlies to their first state title. In the spring, Neale repeated as 1,600 and 3,200 champion at the state track championships.
Disappointment would have to be the main theme of Neale’s junior campaign. After keeping her main rival, Katie Knight, in check as underclassmen, Neale placed second to Knight in the 2011 state cross country meet. In the spring, Neale won the 800 but was injured during the race and had to pull out of the 1,600.
Neale would bounce back with a vengeance in her senior year. This past year Neale avenged her second-place finish in 2011 by winning the 3A state cross country championships and leading the Grizzlies to a state title in the process. In track Neale won the 800 and 1,600 at state and finished her career as the 3A record-holder in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.
