The culprit spent more than a month on the lam, a nuisance to neighbors with his babble most fowl.
Last Saturday, police finally got their man -- a rogue rooster with piercing pipes.
For weeks, a woman left anonymous voice mail messages with city hall and the police department complaining about the cock's shrill early morning solos. Some calls came in as early as 4:30 a.m., moments after she presumably was rousted from her slumber.
The problem was, the caller for more than a month didn't tell police where she lives.
"We totally understood her frustration. We wanted to help," Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said. "It just took us some time. We had no idea where to go."
Police purchased a rooster trap and rounded up some feed in anticipation of a break in the case.
Finally, the caller realized she should leave her location. One of her sleep-deprived neighbors also left a message that helped pinpoint the search area to the 500 block of Terrace Street south of downtown.
The chase was afoot. Police enlisted the city's animal control officer.
Last Saturday, the trap was set.
The cagey cock was cautious.
"I think there was some coaxing by the property owner," Willis said.
The rambling rooster eventually ended up behind bars, but was spared a date with the cooking pot.
He now has a new home out in the country where he lives with a retired Monroe police officer.
"I believe it is probably roaming in the yard as we speak," Willis said.
