Investigators last week confirmed the remains were those of Greg Keller, 58, of Seattle.
Keller had been missing since fall 2009. Friends called police after he didn't return from a weeklong hike in the Darrington area.
Snohomish County's rescue crews at the time conducted "an extensive two-day search" of the area where Keller was hiking but could not find him, a sheriff's spokeswoman said last week.
Hikers earlier this month called police after spotting skeletal remains on the trail.
Keller's cause and manner of death are being investigated by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office.
Detectives are awaiting results of the medical examiner's report, sheriff's Lt. Jeff Brand said Monday.
