The Everett Mountaineers are offering a free seminar on beginning backpacking from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday in Room TC2C at the Everett PUD building at 2320 California St., Everett. The class is limited to 25 people.
The seminar will cover clothing, equipment, nutrition, hydration and the principles of leaving no trace while backpacking.

Emergency testing: An emergency alarm is scheduled for testing Wednesday at several county buildings, the Snohomish Police Department and the Verlot Ranger Station.
The time was tentative for about 4 p.m., officials said. The alarm will last about 15 seconds.
Pool opening: Snohomish County’s McCollum County Park Pool is scheduled to open noon Thursday with swimming lessons beginning the following Monday.
The outdoor pool at the park at 600 128th St. SE, Everett, has been serving Snohomish County since 1970. In addition to swimming lessons, there are pool rentals, open swims and a summer league swim team through Sept. 3.
