SEATTLE — The U.S. attorney’s office in Seattle says a Lakewood oncologist has agreed to pay the United States $3.1 million to settle accusations that he and his wife significantly overbilled federal health care programs.
U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan said Thursday in a statement that the government contends Dr. Alfred Chan and his wife, Judy Chan, overbilled Medicare and other federal health care programs by more than $1 million for cancer treatment drugs.
Durkan said the settlement recovers nearly three times the estimated loss. A former employee who alerted the government will receive more than $600,000 of the settlement under the False Claims Act.
Federal prosecutors said the Chans fled to Taiwan in February 2011.
