The man, who has chosen to remain anonymous, realized he had one of the three winning tickets on Sunday when he stopped at a Safeway to get dinner and check his numbers. He checked the numbers twice at the store and then went home and looked it up online, according to the Washington Lottery.
The winner chose all five numbers correctly. For this particular drawing, $650,000 was the jackpot and three people chose the correct five numbers, so the prize gets split in three.
For the past nine months, he and his fiance have been working to clear the paperwork for her and their daughter to move to the United States from Costa Rica.
The final steps required a financial commitment that they weren't able to meet, until he cashed in the lottery ticket on Monday afternoon. He plans to transfer money to his fiance's bank account before revealing the good news about his win.
He bought the winning ticket at the 7-Eleven on 196th Street SW in Lynnwood, and the store will receive a $2,166.66 selling bonus. The winner plays Washington's Lottery's Hit 5, Lotto, and Powerball games twice per week. He's previously won small amounts, but this is his first big win.
