Last week at the Paris Air Show, aerospace behemoths the Boeing Co. and Airbuswaged an annual public relations battle over who offers the better jetliners and how many are being ordered by air carriers. Much of the news coverage of this fake horse race would leave one thinking that airline CEOs walk up to a booth and sign up for airplanes. But the deals are months in the making and the announcements are orchestrated. What really matters, of course, is hardware out the door and checks in the mail.
