LAKEWOOD — Police in Lakewood say the gun that officers saw before they fatally shot a man at a residence last week turned out to be a “very realistic-looking metal cap gun.”
Lt. Chris Lawler said Monday in a statement that both officers who fired at 28-year-old Patrick O’Meara are on paid administrative leave while the June 18 shooting is investigated. The officers were not identified.
Lawler said officers had a felony theft arrest warrant for O’Meara and learned he was in a residence in the Tillicum area. The spokesman said officers approached, knocked and announced themselves. Other officers at the side of the residence saw O’Meara inside, armed with what looked like a gun. Lawler said officers fired when O’Meara ignored repeated orders to drop the weapon.
Despite CPR, O’Meara died at the scene.
