The shooting was reported about 5:30 p.m. along S. Carpenter Road, northeast of Snohomish.
Investigators believe it may have been a botched robbery, Snohomish County sheriff's spokeswoman Shari Ireton said.
As of 8 p.m. Friday, the crime scene remained under investigation by Major Crimes detectives. The road was closed, and people were asked to avoid the area.
"Witnesses reported that there were possibly seven total suspects involved in the shooting, which may have began as a robbery," Ireton said. "Four of the suspects are accounted for and deputies are still searching the area" for three more.
The victim, a 48-year-old man, had been shot in the leg. He is expected to survive.
Initial reports were that the victim may have surprised a burglar, Ireton said.
One suspect was described as a white man with gray hair. He was said to be driving a white Dodge truck, according to the sheriff's office.
Additional details were not released Friday evening.
