Give until it hurts

Simplify, simplify, simplify! Warren Buffett, the third-richest man in the world and a leading philanthropist, is challenging his peers to commit at least half their wealth to charity, suggesting they can get by on $500 million. "If you have trouble living on $500 million," Buffett said, "I'm going to put out a book, 'How to Live on $500 Million.'"

Among Buffett's tips for scraping by on a half-billion dollars:

  • If your caviar is past its pull date use it as fishing bait.
  • Walk, rather than take your monorail to the mailbox.
  • Limit your personal jet costs by picking the tax haven closest to your mansion.
  • Only try to buy those elections you know you can win.

They would know: The uncertainty over the fate of NSA leaker Edward Snowden grew with a Russian lawmaker's tweet that Snowden had accepted Venezuela's offer of political asylum, a post that was later deleted. Venezuela then said it has had no contact with Snowden.

Hoping to clear up the confusion, the National Security Agency offered to go over its copies of the emails, phone calls and tweets of everyone involved.

Don't know much about history: On this day in 1985, Coca-Cola said it was bringing back the old Coke formula but would still sell New Coke.

To celebrate the anniversary, the soft-drink giant will release special edition cans of Classic New Old Classic New Coke Classic.
