Cohn's contract now continues until June 30, 2016. He was hired in 2009.
"We're pleased with his work and want to do all we can to make sure he's around for three more years," said Jeff Russell, school board president.
Cohn has salary of $182,204, the same salary he will receive for the 2013-14 school year, according to Mary Waggoner, school district spokeswoman.
Board members meet with Cohn at least twice a year to evaluate his performance. His contract is reviewed annually to consider an extension.
Cohn's annual performance review was conducted by a three-member school board subcommittee of Russell and board members Carol Andrews and Pam LeSesne. The group met six times to discuss Cohn's annual evaluation.
Cohn's contract extension was approved as part of the consent agenda at the school board's July 2 meeting with board members Russell, Andrews and Ed Petersen's approval. Board members LeSesne and Jessica Olson were absent.
Russell said he thinks that the district is making significant progress in hiring minorities for teaching, principal and administration openings.
The board also is pleased with the academic progress made by Hispanic students on state standardized testing, he said. "We've had a marked jump in the percent of Hispanic students meeting standards," Russell said.
For example, 73 percent of 10th grade Hispanic students met the state's reading standards and nearly 82 percent met the state's writing standards in the 2011-12 school year, according to the state Superintendent's Office.
Rates dropped for science and math, although the district's Hispanic students performed above the state average. Twenty-seven percent of the school district's Hispanic 10th graders met the state math standards and 32 percent met the state's science standards.
Russell said the district also helped test a new teacher-principal evaluation system that is being implemented statewide.
"We feel we're ahead of many of other districts across the state because of the collaborative work done between the Everett Education Association and the administration when it came to the implementation of the pilot program," Russell said.
