Voter guide for Snohomish County elections is online

Snohomish County voters can go online today to read about the candidates and measures on the Aug. 6 primary ballot.

Election officials have posted the official voter's pamphlet containing statements and photographs of those running in the 17 contests taking place around the county. (Warning: it is a big file to open.)

Among them are a five-person battle for a seat on the County Council and heated mayoral races in Lynnwood and Mukilteo. Under the state's top-two primary format, the two candidates with the most votes in each of these races will face off in November.

There's also information on a proposed sales tax hike in Monroe to help pay for public safety and another in Arlington for repairing and improving city streets.

Those hoping to find arguments for and against each of the tax hikes will be disappointed. In Arlington, no one filed arguments on either side and in Monroe, there is only a statement favoring the increase.

On Wednesday, the county will mail copies of the 20-page document to the 330,000 registered voters eligible to cast ballots in the election.

Ballots will be sent Thursday and voting will begin.

But history shows most eligible voters won't participate. Turnout is averaging 27 percent in Snohomish County in odd-year primaries over the past decade and only reached 25.8 percent in 2011
