PORTLAND, Ore. — The estimated size of a wildfire on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation has more than doubled, mostly because fire officials have a better map.
KTVZ-TV reported Wednesday (http://bit.ly/1bi4QRs) that fire officials now estimate it is within an area of about 70 square miles, or about 45,000 acres. The estimate comes from infrared photography taken on a flight early Wednesday.
The fire started Saturday.
Firefighters estimated Wednesday that it’s 40 percent contained and would be fully contained on Sunday.
It’s burning in sagebrush, grass and juniper and has caused little damage to structures. Firefighters warned residents of a subdivision Tuesday night to be ready to evacuate if conditions get worse.
Smoke from the fire reduced air quality to the “moderate” category in Bend, Madras and Prineville Tuesday and again Wednesday morning.
