Notes from Day 4 of Seahawks training camp

First the obligatory personnel notes:

DE Cliff Avril was not inaction today, though Pete Carroll didn't talk to media after practice, so we didn't get an explanation why. Could very well be to rest the foot that was an issue in offseason workouts. Rookie T Michael Bowie also sat out today's practice. FB Michael Robinson (ankle) was back in action after missing to days. Still out, in addition to the players on the PUP list, were LB Heath Farwell (back spasms) and DT Jesse Williams (knee).

On to some observations from practice:

--Rookie receiver Chris Harper, who has had a quiet first few days of camp, was more involved in the passing game today and had several nice catches.

--Undrafted rookie Benson Mayowa, also known as "The kid from Idaho" (that's what Carroll referred to him as during rookie minicamp), got a chance to work with the first-team defense a bit at the Leo end spot with Avril sidelined.

--Rookie Jordan Hill got more time with the first-team defense in base packages than in the past few days.

--Bruce Irvin, who the Seahawks are trying at strongside linebacker, saw plenty of reps there in the base D with the first team, more than in the first couple of days when Malcolm Smith was in that spot. On one play, we saw the potential negative of having Irvin, a DE last year and in college, playing linebacker in the base D when the offense went three wide, forcing Irvin to cover receiver Jermaine Kearse. The ball didn't end up being thrown that direction, but that potential mismatch is something teams would certainly try to create if the Seahawks have Irvin playing a true linebacker spot and not as a pass-rusher.

--Undrafted rookie John Lotuleilei continues to look like somebody with a real shot of making the team. He's a bit undersized (hence the undrafted part) but he moves very well. He also got a pretty solid hit on fellow rookie Spencer Ware after the fullback caught pass in the flat.

--Linebacker O’Brien Schofield, who the Seahawks claimed off of waivers yesterday, was taking a physical and did not practice.

--Attendance was announced at 2,825.
