Officer Rory Mundwiler, 30, is about to start his third year assigned to Henry M. Jackson High School and Heatherwood Middle School.
The award came from the Washington School Safety Organization. He was chosen for his skills at handling emergencies at the school but also for being compassionate and reaching out to kids, according to a police department news release.
A City Council recognition ceremony for Mundwiler is set for Sept. 3, said Mill Creek Police Chief Bob Crannell.
In the nomination form, Sgt. Kate Hamilton wrote that Mundwiler is a good mentor and role model.
He's been helping the schools with their safety plans and provides information to parents and children about important crime-related issues, like "sexting" and driving under the influence, the documents show.
The award is a "huge honor," Mundwiler said. He enjoys working with principals, teachers and counselors on school-related issues.
"I certainly work extremely hard at what I'm doing," he said. "I have so much more to learn."
In their daily lives, children are exposed to negative influences such as drug use and difficult family situations, Mundwiler said. He tries to counteract that, to teach them good habits and to make good choices.
"If I can be a positive influence while I'm at school to these kids, it won't necessarily solve their problems, but it gives them that extra tool in their bag to do whatever it is that they want to do," he said.
