Weekend fun: Fair, hiking, firefighter challenge, more

Fair for all: The Evergreen State Fair is in full swing through the weekend and beyond. To add to the festivities (and traffic), Monroe’s Fair Days Parade begins at 11 a.m. Saturday in downtown Monroe. Street dancing and food vendors will open for business at 9 a.m. Get all the fair details in our story here.

Combat challenge: Watch firefighters show off their skills on Friday and Saturday. The competition includes an obstacle course involving running, climbing, hoisting and chopping. A children’s obstacle course also is planned. Get the details in our story here.

Take a hike: Summer won’t last forever. Make the most of it by trying out one of these 8 hikes, ranging from easy to strenuous. All are close enough to make it a day trip from Snohomish County. Read about them here.

World record: The Everett and Monroe high school lacrosse teams will attempt to break the record for the longest lacrosse game ever played. They start at 7:30 p.m. Friday and plan to play until 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kasch Park in south Everett. The event is open to the public from 7:30-11 p.m. on Friday, and again at 7 a.m. on Saturday. No public admission while the park is closed.

Free park day: Admission fees are waived at national parks on Sunday to celebrate the National Park Service’s birthday. Around here, Olympic and Rainier are the big national parks. North Cascades does not charge an entry fee. Get more info here. If you’re heading to Rainier, here are a few hikes that are worth the effort.

Shred it: Skaters of all ages can take part in Mill Creek’s free “Board Bash” from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Mill Creek Sports Park, 13903 North Creek Drive. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the all-important medical release form must be signed. Get more information here.

Bare necessities: The Ludus Youth Theatre Group of Lake Stevens presents a half-hour performance of “The Jungle Book” at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the PUD auditorium, 2320 California St., Everett. Admission is $5. Get more information here.

Improve your improv: Pick up some tips, maybe a new career, when the Blue Stilly Players present a free audience-participation improv show from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Legion Park, 114 N. Olympic Ave., Arlington. Get more information here.

Live radio: A family-style musical show, “The Kaddywompas Radio Show,” will be recorded live on stage at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater, 1211 Fourth St., Snohomish.
