Regarding the Sunday column, “Immigrants keep the American Dream alive”: Sid Schwab must live in an alternate reality. Actual statistics show Hispanic immigrants dropping out of school at a 75 percent rate, which is hardly going to make us world leaders. Schwab can’t name anything the last 50 years of immigration has done for America other than provide a greater variety of restaurants and a cheap labor force to keep wages down. Here is a novel concept: Perhaps the American Dream can best be preserved by preserving Americans themselves rather than completely replacing them with another population of uninvited encroachers.
Here is another novel idea, how about putting immigration to a public vote instead of leaving it to a bunch of disinterested plutocrats to decide? Why must our “broken system” only have amnesty as a solution? Our system is not broken, it is our gutless and corrupt leaders who will not enforce the system that is broken. The proof of this is president Eisenhower’s successful direct deportation of illegal immigrants. These people are the responsibility of the Mexican government. Why won’t liberals put the effort into making Mexico accountable to their people that they make to make me responsible for them?
