SPOKANE — If the Everett AquaSox are going to win the second-half title in the Northwest League’s North Division, they’re going to have to do it at home.
The Frogs, the NWL North’s first-half champs, missed out on a chance to make it a sweep Friday night. losing to the Spokane Indians 7-2 before a crowd of 6,840 at Avista Stadium.
Everett, 19-16 in the second half, lead the second-place Indians (17-18) by two games with three games remaining in the regular season. The two teams open a three-game series tonight in Everett. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Friday night’s game was not one of the Frogs’ better efforts. They managed just four hits, struck out 13 times and committed three errors.
Chantz Mack accounted for both of Everett’s runs with a two-run home run to right field in the fourth inning, his first HR of the season. Mack’s blast tied the game 2-2.
Spokane answered in the bottom of fourth, taking the lead for good with a pair of runs, Cam Schiller drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a double by Jamie Jarmon. Gabriel Roa followed with an RBI bunt single that scored Schiller. Jarmon then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Cordell.
Spokane extended its lead to 5-2 in the sixth when Schiller, who had tripled, scored on Roa’s sacrifice fly. Roa, the Indians’ No. 9 hitter, finished the game 2-for-2 with a pair of sacrifice flies and three RBI.
Everett starting pitcher Tommy Burns (2-2) took the loss. He pitched four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. He walked two and struck out two.
Spokane starter Kelvin Vasquez held Everett to three hits and two runs over six innings. He struck out eight and evened his season record at 2-2.
Former Everett Community College standout Keone Kela pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Indians. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out four.
