Overtime

Overtime

I'll take sleep deprivation for $200, Alex: "The Million Second Quiz," a game show that plays out over two weeks, debuts Sept. 9 on NBC.

The game lasts 1 million seconds, or 11.57 days, and the contestants presumably are folks who scoff at "Jeopardy" and say, "I could play that game in my sleep."

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy gray dog: Manson H. Whitlock, one of the country's longest-serving repairmen of typewriters, has died at age 96 at his home in Connecticut.

Mr. Whitlock lived long enough to witness a revival of interest in manual typewriters by young hipsters -- who were even more amazed to meet someone who repaired things rather than throw them in the trash.

Don't know much about history: On this day in 1901, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt first used the phrase "Speak softly, and carry a big stick" to describe his foreign policy.

By asking a fractious Congress for authorization to conduct military strikes against Syria (Page A3), President Barack Obama has pretty much ruled out the "speak softly" part.
