NMFS awards stranded marine mammal grants

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The North Slope Borough and a Seward organization will receive federal grant money to rescue stranded marine mammals and investigate their health problems.
The National Marine Fisheries Service is awarding nearly $86,000 to the borough and $72,683 to the Alaska SeaLife Center for stranded marine mammal rescue.
They are part of the National Marine Mammal Stranding Network. The network provides care to whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions and other marine mammals that are in peril.
NOAA Fisheries lead marine mammal veterinarian Teri Rowles says in an announcement that illnesses in marine mammals may signal changes that have significant implications for oceans and humans.
The agency awarded 12 grants that totaled more than $1 million.
