The gas attacks in Syria (if proved true) are, of course terrible. But are they more heinous than the use of machine guns, mortars, shells and rockets to murder the population, as has been the case over the last several months? Chemical warfare flips the diplomatic switch and gives us an excuse to slap their hand. Had they not done this then, presumably, we would have allowed them to go on slaughtering each other in the conventional way which warrants no corporal punishment.
