Richard Sherman and Steve Smith, the feud that isn't
Richard Sherman and Steve Smith, two players who are talented, confident, and not afraid to mix things up, including with each other, are suddenly going all diplomatic as they prepare to face off in Sunday's season opener.
Sherman, who been involved in verbal and Twitter feuds with everyone from A.J. Green to Tom Brady to Darrelle Revis to ESPN's Skip Bayless (that's just the short list), had nothing but good things to say about Smith on Thursday, even though Smith was so frustrated with Sherman that he threw the corner to the ground a couple of times in last year's game.
"I'm always looking forward to having a competitive battle," Sherman said. "There are a lot of good receivers in this league, and he's one of the best who's been doing it a long time. So it's going to be a great battle."
And Smith, a player so fiery that he once broke a teammate's nose in a practice fight, says a rematch with Sherman is no big deal. He even complimented Seattle's secondary.
"They're very physical, they fly around," Smith said on a conference call. "They trust and believe in each other, they believe that they're the best on the field and they carry that on to the game, and when you have confidence like that, it's hard to be shaken.
Smith was held to just four catches for 40 yards on 13 targets last year, yet Sherman still felt the need to compliment the veteran receiver.
"Not really," Sherman said when asked if he thought he played well against Smith last year. "Shoot, he caught some balls and made some plays for them especially when it counted in crucial drives to get them closer to the end zone. He's a veteran in the game, I don't think too many people can get in his head. He's been doing it a while, I think he gets in his own head sometimes."
Let's hope they give us some more action on the field that they have in the media this week.
