KENNEWICK — The Everett Silvertips topped the defending Western Hockey League champion Portland Winterhawks in preseason action for the second time in six days, winning 8-2 Friday morning at the Tri-City Americans Preseason Tournament. Everett improved to 4-0 in the preseason.
Everett beat Portland 6-4 Sunday at Comcast Arena in a game in which the Winterhawks were missing nine players because of NHL rookie training camps. Portland was missing those nine players again Friday, while the Tips had six players away at NHL camps. But it was Everett that adjusted better to the missing personnel. Portland scored the game’s first and last goals, but the Tips scored eight in between.
Joshua Winquist continued his preseason scoring tear, notching two goals and an assist to lead the Tips. Winquist, Everett’s leading scorer last season, has five goals and two assists in three preseason contests.
Brayden Low, Manraj Hayer and Ivan Nikolishin each added a goal and two assists for Everett. Carson Stadnyk, Tyler Sandhu and Waltteri Hopponen scored the other goals for the Tips. Daniel Cotton earned the win in goal with 31 saves.
Dominic Turgeon and Chase De Leo scored for Portland (2-2). Adin Hill made 28 saves for the Winterhawks.
Everett concludes its time in Kennewick on Saturday, facing Kootenay in a game that faces off at 11 a.m.
