Seahawks players were still enjoying a long weekend Monday following a Thursday night game, but Pete Carroll had his regular Monday press conference. Here are a few highlights:
Rookie linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis, who was placed on injured reserve Friday because of a shoulder injury, “needs some work done” on a labrum issue, Carroll said.
Meanwhile the player Seattle claimed off of waivers to fill the open roster spot, cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy, won’t be joining the team after failing a physical. That means the Seahawks currently have an open spot on their roster, but Carroll didn’t say what move would be made to fill it.
On cornerback Jeremy Lane, who was listed as questionable with a glute injury and ended up on playing, Carroll said Lane was, “close at the end of the week; the short week didn’t help.” Lane is expected to be back in action this week, Carroll said.
Tight end Cooper Helfet, who missed Thursday night’s game with an ankle injury, isn’t ready to practice yet, and Carroll called Helfet’s situation day-to-day, saying, “We really won’t know until the end of the week.”
Center Max Unger likely won’t be back this week from the ankle and knee injuries that have kept him out two games, but is making progress according to Carroll: “He is getting better. I don’t know if we’ll be able to get him on the field this week. The feeling is he should be able to make it back this week unless maybe we can get a surprise in the next couple of days. A little bit gimpy, but he’s getting better.”
And a few non-injury notes:
—Cornerback Tharold Simon was called for four penalties last week, and it was hardly the first time Simon has gotten the attention of officials.
“I need to solve that common thread whatever it was, because he’s had a bundle of them here,” Carroll said. “It’s a young guy just trying to figure out the league—what’s OK and what isn’t. We just need to do a better job of helping. He’s playing hard and playing tough and all, but he’s definitely finding himself in front of the officials a lot.”
—Carroll said he was “Pleasantly surprised” that tight end Tony Moeaki is contributing as much as he is so soon.
—When asked about a certain owner tweeting out an apology following a loss (49ers owner Jed York after Thursday’s game), Carroll smiled and said, “Our owner would never do that.”
Asked more about the relationship between him, owner Paul Allen and GM John Schneider, Carroll said, “I have such good support in all that john does and Peter. It seems like it’s been effortless, really. We’ve gotten along so smoothly and seeing eye-to-eye on everything we’ve dealt with. Paul has been so supportive of the multitude of things John’s in charge of, which really impacts him a great deal with the money and the decisions and all that kind of stuff. We’ve just worked together. The communication has always been open and we’ve had good dialog in every turn for all of the years, so I think w have such a strong base now that we all feel like we can get through whatever we have to deal with… It really couldn’t be better. Our format and setup couldn’t be better. There’s nothing to tweak, it’s right on.”
—Finally, Carroll was asked about Russell Wilson and Richard Sherman enjoying a postgame meal on the 49ers logo after the game, something that was set up by NBC, and something that upset some 49ers fans, as well as Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice.
Carroll said no one asked him about that before it happened, but he had been asked, “I’d have thought, yeah, they could have done it somewhere else, yeah, that would have been good, but that’s up to the networks. We don’t care, it meant nothing at all; it was nothing. It gave some people something to talk about, but it was nothing. Our guys didn’t care at all the way I understand it.”
