Big bird

If it ain't Boeing, the prez ain't going: Airbus said it does not plan to submit a bid to build the next Air Force One jetliner, making the Boeing Co. the only contender for the contract.

That's certainly bad news for the Obama girls, who were looking forward to moving their airborne bedrooms upstairs and away from their parents in an Air Force One based on Airbus' multiple-level A380.

So long, V'Ger: Thirty-six years after it was launched, Voyager 1 has become the first spacecraft ever to leave the solar system, NASA says.

The spacecraft is destined to cruise on nuclear power through interstellar space until 2273, when, having been transformed into an immensely powerful energy cloud, it will have a heavily hyped but disappointing, overlong and slow-moving encounter with the starship Enterprise.

Plenty of time for polo: Britain's Prince William has completed the operational phase of his seven-year military career, the Royal Air Force says.

And so William's job description changes from "flies helicopters" to "does whatever it is royals do."
