Meadowdale High School student collapses, dies

LYNNWOOD -- A Meadowdale High School student died Friday morning after suffering a medical problem during a physical education class.
Matthew Truax was 16 and a junior, according to the Edmonds School District. His family has asked for privacy.
School staff called 911 just before 10 a.m. because Truax had collapsed, according to school and fire officials.
Teachers began CPR, and firefighters took over, Assistant Fire Chief Gregg Sieloff said. The boy was unresponsive when crews arrived.
Firefighters continued life-saving efforts while they rushed the boy to a local hospital, Sieloff said. "His heart just wouldn't get going again," Sieloff said. "We're not sure what caused it."
Additional counseling resources were being made available for students and their families. Principal Kevin Allen also sent a letter home to parents.
"Those who knew Matthew knew him as a respectful, hard-working young man who was serious about his education, an all-around nice kid who we will miss," Allen wrote. "I know you join us in sending his family our deepest condolences during this difficult time."
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to investigate the boy's cause of death.
