OAK HARBOR — Sheynne Sams, playing in his first game of the season, looked like he hadn’t lost a step, guiding the Oak Harbor Wildcats to a wild come-from-behind victory over Arlington 40-36 in a nonleague game played at Wildcat Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
Sams ran for 168 yards on 16 carries and led the Wildcats’ offense late, scoring two second-half touchdowns. Sams’ backfield mate, fullback Dejon Devroe, had his second consecutive big game on the ground, rushing for 197 yards on 23 carries. He contributed three touchdowns of his own, including the game-winning score with 1 minute and 54 seconds remaining that put the Wildcats up for good.
“I don’t know if I was expecting nearly 400 yards (in two games) or not,” said Oak Harbor head coach Jay Turner on Devroe’s start to the season. “He’s a special talent. He has a gear that a lot of guys don’t have. (Sheynne) is more of a bouncer and a cutter. Those two are definitely a Ying and Yang to one another.”
The game began with Arlington striking with 22 first-quarter points as Eagles quarterback Cam Scrimgeour connected with wide receiver Max Gray for two touchdowns. Scrimgeour would also hit Connor Bovard on a 26-yard touchdown pass for the lone score in the second quarter to give the Eagles a 29-14 halftime lead.
Devroe, along with his go-ahead touchdown run, managed to pick off a Scrimgeour pass with the Eagles driving to secure the win.
