The man, 32, was at the wheel of a gold Dodge that sped away after a woman reported spotting somebody trying to break into her car, triggering the alarm, according to a Marysville police report.
An officer was nearby, and attempted to stop the car in the 14400 block of 51st Avenue NE. The driver didn't immediately stop, but once he did, initially seemed to cooperate. That ended when he was told to shut off the engine. He instead threw the car into gear and drove away.
The chase headed north onto Smokey Point Boulevard, reaching up to 85 mph. Then the driver headed east and down a dead end street. Near the 3800 block of 178th Place NE, he reportedly tried to get away by driving through a wooden fence. Instead, he crashed into a pile of scrap lumber.
The man was trying to climb out through the car's driver's side window when police grabbed him. He reportedly had a plastic tube in his mouth, something the officer said appeared to be a "tooter," used for ingesting illegal drugs.
The man reportedly had several shaved keys, used for stealing cars. A handgun holster also was reportedly tucked into the front of his pants. He claimed it was for a toy gun.
Once he gave officers his true name, they determined he was a convicted felon with a suspended license. He was in the back of the squad car when police dispatchers reported that a witness had seen the driver toss a handgun during the chase. A check of the gun's serial number showed it had been reported stolen.
The man was booked into jail for investigation of attempting to elude police and being a felon in possession of a stolen firearm.
