Below is the information police released earlier in the case:
EVERETT – Police here are investigating why a 5-year-old girl was taken out a window at an Everett apartment early Saturday and later freed about a mile away.
The child knocked on an apartment door at 4:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Bruskrud Road. Police were summoned, and they took the her into custody. She was not fully clothed but there was no indication of sexual assault, said officer Aaron Snell, Everett police spokesman.
About 5:30 a.m., officers were sent to an apartment in the 800 block of 112th Street SE after somebody reported a missing screen on an open window. Police contacted the occupant, and the man discovered his 5-year-old daughter was missing, Snell said.
A police dog followed a trail from the apartment at 112th Street SE along the Interurban Trail to the apartment on Bruskrud Road where the girl sought help. The distances is about one mile. Along the way, items of “evidentiary value” were found, Snell said. He offered no description.
Police believe the child was taken from her room at about 3 a.m. by a stranger and they are investigating the case as an apparent abduction, Snell said. The girl was being interviewed by detectives who specialize in crimes against children and being examined at a local hospital.
The girl told police that the man who took her was short and had darker skin. He was wearing jeans, a shirt, a white hat and earrings.
Police urged anyone who saw or heard something suspicious near where the crime occurred to call 911 or the Everett Police Department TIP LINE at 425-257-8450.
