LYNNWOOD --
Patrons and employees escaped safely from the Target store here on Saturday evening after a suspicious fire broke out in a back room.
Smoke and water damage kept the location closed Sunday as fire officials investigated the cause. Minneapolis-based Target Corp. expected to reopen the store sometime Monday.
“The management of Target handled themselves very well, got all of the people out and the employees out,” Assistant Lynnwood Fire Chief Gregg Sieloff said.
Crews responded around 7:30 p.m. to the store on 18305 Alderwood Mall Parkway. Within 20 minutes, firefighters had knocked out the flames coming from a janitorial area that’s normally closed off to the public, Sieloff said. However, smoke and sprinkler water caused extensive damage to merchandise in stock rooms and the retail area.
The investigation was ongoing Sunday.
Target spokeswoman Stacia Nelson said company planned to reopen its Lynnwood store with full inventory as early as Monday morning.
