The 27th annual Washington State Senior Men’s Amateur Championship and the sixth annual Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship both tee off this morning at Everett Golf &Country Club.
The two tournaments will be held concurrently over 54 holes of stroke play.
Among the players competing in the senior amateur is two-time defending champion Tom Brandes of Bellevue. Last year, Brandes swept the region’s championships. In addition to the senior amateur, he won the Washington State Men’s Mid-Amateur, the PNGA Men’s Mid-Amateur, the PNGA Men’s Senior Amateur and the Washington State Senior Men’s Champion of Champions. Also in the field is Bob Burton of Everett, the 2009 Washington State Golf Association Senior Men’s Player of the Year.
In the Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship, Ron Petersen of Coquitlam, B.C. returns in search of his third straight title. The field also includes Jeff Remington of Edmonds, who won the Washington State Senior Men’s Amateur Championship in 2003.
Amateur golfers who have reached their 55th birthday and who have a USGA Handicap Index of 12.4 strokes or lower at a WSGA member club are eligible to play in the senior men’s championship.
To be eligible for the super senior, golfers must meet the same handicap requirements and be at least 65 years of age.
ERA alums in college
Thirteen members of the Everett Rowing Association’s class of 2013 have announced plans to continue rowing with college programs this season.
They are Beau Skalley, Archbishop Murphy High School, the University of San Diego; Dan Olson, Everett, Cal Maritime Academy; Jonah Srb, Lynnwood, Washington State; Griffin Siadek, Lake Stevens, Lewis and Clark; Kyle Helgerson, Jackson, Washington; Nick Johnston, Glacier Peak, Gonzaga; Connor Murray, Bothell, Gonzaga; David Shur, Archbishop Murphy, Seattle Pacific; Delaney Goetz, Everett, Washington; Emily Moseley, Lake Stevens, Washington; Emily Wayland, Stanwood, Oregon State; Sabrina Paulsen, Cascade, Old Dominion; Lori Vermurlen, Inglemoor, Washington State.
Siadek, Skalley and Shur were members of Everett’s boys varsity four that placed second at the Northwest Regional Championships and fifth at the USRowing National Championships. Murray was in the team’s boys lightweight eight that placed second at regionals and 14th at nationals. Goetz and Wayland won bronze medals with the club’s girls varsity four at the 2012 Youth National Championships.
