A look back at throwbacks

Missed the bus: Volkswagen will end production of its iconic bus in Brazil, the last assembly line for a vehicle that was launched 63 years ago. The breakdown-prone bus was best known in America as the preferred ride of surfers and hippies.

To mark the occasion, owners of VW buses will parade their vans along N. 45th Street in Wallingford, where the vehicles will break down in front of Dick's Drive-in. Drivers will either begin repairs or thumb a ride home.

Wonder what's inside: Just as Twinkies returned after the end of Hostess Brands, loaves of Wonder Bread were back on store shelves Monday.

The news was celebrated by parents with school-age children and oil spill recovery crews looking for a cheap source of floating containment booms.

Last one down's a rotten egg: Budget carrier Allegiant Air canceled 12 flights Monday while it continues its check and replacement of emergency slides on its MD-80 jets.

Allegiant said it would not cut corners where safety is concerned and would replace any defective slides with only the best quality Slip 'N Slides from Wham-O.
