Value the library, and all the people

How did I miss being part of the survey mentioned in Wednesday's article, "Library looks at next chapter?"
I have been a devoted public library patron for nearly 80 years, most of this time at the Everett Public Library. The operative word is "public" so the library is neither a social service nor a charity. It is free and open to the public as Andrew Carnegie envisioned it with no admission based on how recently one bathed or how one was dressed. From the members of the public standing around outside (since they can no longer sit), I have never had a bit of trouble. The security guard seems to be a constant and attentive presence.
It is perhaps a credit to the library that people gather around it rather than another public building such as the City HalI or Post Office. I certainly agree with those surveyed who credit the library with commendable service. Particularly, I note the program some of the librarians organized a year or so ago to collect good socks for the needy people in the area after consulting them as to their need.
So I am happy to value the library; the books, the librarians and staff and all the other library patrons both inside and outside of the library.
