VANCOUVER, B.C. -- The Everett Silvertips had a successful opening to the 2013-14 Western Hockey League season at home. On Friday night, the Tips continued that momentum on the road.
Everett won its first road game of the season as the Tips knocked off the Vancouver Giants 4-1.
Manraj Hayer, Joshua Winquist, Carson Stadnyk and Kohl Bauml scored goals for Everett (2-0-0-0), which was coming off an 8-3 home victory over Prince George in its regular-season opener last Saturday. Stadnyk's goal 20 seconds into the third period was the backbreaker, giving the Tips a 3-1 lead after Vancouver pulled within one late in the second period.
The Tips also received contributions from the two players who returned from NHL training camps earlier this week. Defenseman Mirco Mueller had two assists, and rookie center Jujhar Khaira had an assist in his WHL debut.
Daniel Cotton earned the win in goal with 25 saves.
Anthony Ast scored the lone goal for Vancouver (1-3-0-0). Payton Lee made 17 saves in net for the Giants.
Everett struck first at 14 minutes, 3 seconds of the first period. Stadnyk's feed found Hayer open down low, and Hayer converted to give the Tips a 1-0 lead.
The Tips then doubled their lead 2:53 into the second period. Everett used some good puck movement in the offensive zone, with Cole MacDonald eventually feeding Winquist on the doorstep for the tap-in to make it 2-0.
Vancouver got a power play late in the second period and the Giants converted, Ast redirecting Arvin Atwal's shot from the point past Cotton to get Vancouver back within one goal.
But Vancouver's joy was short-lived. Just 20 seconds into the third period Everett restored its two-goal lead, Stadnyk backhanding in the rebound following Mueller's shot from the point.
Everett iced the game at 12:17 while short-handed. Dawson Leedahl won a faceoff in the Vancouver zone right to Bauml, who sniped a shot into the corner to complete the scoring.
The Silvertips next game is Wednesday night at home against Kelowna. The faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The contest is the first of three home games in four nights for the Tips.
